Chance the Dog getting a special Christmas!

December 15, 2014

Chance almost didn’t have a Christmas at all.  Lucky for Chance, Second Chance stepped in to help him.  His owner had been away for many months and had left his dog in the care of others.  He returned to find his dog in poor condition.  He had no money, no way to care for him himself, and no place to live.  He didn’t want to bring the dog back to the people caring for him.  So, he thought the only way to stop the suffering was to put him to sleep.

But, Second Chance couldn’t let that happen.  Chance is only two years old and a sweetheart.  When he came to the shelter he had itchy raw skin, and was in obvious pain.  Our veterinary staff checked him over and determined that his condition was not contagious and was very treatable – and curable.  When this was explained to the owner, he asked if Second Chance would take him since he didn’t want the dog to be put down.   He didn’t want him to suffer and felt like euthanasia was his only option.  We told him if he wanted to surrender the dog, we would get him all healed up and find him a loving home.  At that point the owner broke down, relieved he did not have to put his beloved dog down to stop the suffering and happy that we could get him the care he needed – and a second chance.

His conditions, including the skin condition (Alopecia), an ear infection,  and yeast and bacteria on his skin and ears.  He requires daily baths, steroids, special creams, antibiotics and ear treatments.  He also needs to be neutered but that has to wait until he is better.  He will be with us for weeks while he undergoes all his treatments, his hair begins to grow back, and he is well enough – and cured, before he can be adopted.

Chance is not the only one right now undergoing medical treatment before they can be healthy and ready for adoption.  Chance has other friends to spend Christmas with at the shelter becuase they too will not be ready for a home until after Christmas.

If you would like to see Chance’s photo and follow his story, please go to gofund.me/chancethedog.  If you would like to help Chance to have a great Christmas, and help his friends as well that also need medical care, you can make a donation on this page as well.   Thank you!

EAST BROOKFIELD, MASS., December 3, 2014 – Second Chance Animal Shelter is doing a special campaign this holiday season.  With all the sad stories and negative images of pets not being cared for, they want to show how important caring for pets is – and how much happiness they bring into our lives.  Therefore, they have started the “Mistlepaw Holiday Challenge”.

“Social media has been a tremendous help in helping us to get pets in need adopted, and raising awareness of their plight” stated Sheryl Blancato, Executive Direct.  “We want to see the happiness that pets bring into our lives spread this holiday season with this unique challenge.  There are so many negative images on social media, we want to show the positives too”.

The challenge is simple.  We want to show how important pets are in our lives – and how important it is to give back to them by showing our love.  So – get out your cameras and take a picture or video that tells everyone how much your pet means to you!  Take a video telling everyone what your pet means to you, show your love with a hug, kiss, or a treat for your furry companion.  Or simply take a picture of you with your pet!  We want everyone to treat their pets with love and this is your chance to join in.

Upload that video or picture to your Facebook, Twitter, or other social media account and also like our Facebook page www.facebook.com/secondchanceanimals or follow us on Twitter @secondchanceas and add your picture or video to our page as well – and challenge your friends to do the same.  We want the internet to be filled with pictures of love for pets this holiday season – and beyond!

#mistlepawholidaychallenge needs to show the world that we all care for pets and are grateful for what they bring into our lives.

If you want to do more to help pets in need, you can help by donating to Second Chance Animal Shelter at www.secondchanceanimals.org  Every pet needs to feel love this holiday season.
